Wépion - La Marlagne

The renovation project of the Marcel Hicter Cultural Centre – La Marlagne is part of a comprehensive transformation aimed at modernising the infrastructure while significantly improving energy performance and preserving the site's heritage identity.

This large-scale construction project, launched in 2025, primarily concerns the main building and spans approximately two years, with a planned reopening scheduled for 2027. During this period, the site is entirely closed to the public to ensure safety and the smooth running of the works.

The intervention is based on a holistic approach structured around several phases. A first demolition and stripping phase prepared the existing structures: dismantling of technical installations, removal of finishes, partial deconstruction of certain concrete elements and removal of theatre equipment.

The reconstruction and transformation phase notably concerns the theatre, with the installation of a new tiered seating area incorporating a control room, improved comfort and visibility, as well as enhanced accessibility for people with reduced mobility. The developments also include the creation of new access points, staircases and lifts, as well as the complete reconfiguration of interior spaces.

In parallel, an in-depth technical renovation is being implemented, including the installation of dual-flow ventilation systems, the replacement of heating installations with more sustainable solutions (heat pumps and a backup boiler), as well as rainwater management via recovery tanks.

The exterior works also contribute to the requalification of the site, with the redesign of the surroundings, the creation of accessible pathways, improved lighting and better landscape integration.

The overall project is part of an ambitious environmental approach, aimed at significantly reducing energy consumption, while promoting the reuse and valorisation of materials from the deconstruction process.

This project therefore represents a complete revitalisation of the site, balancing contemporary requirements, sustainability and the upgrading of cultural facilities.
