Namur Bump

Energy renovation of the Moretus Plantin University Library.

The renovation project of the Moretus Plantin University Library (BUMP) and the redevelopment of the Forum is part of a preservation and modernisation approach. It is all the more sensitive given that the building is listed as part of Wallonia's tangible cultural heritage, which requires balancing energy standard compliance with the preservation of its historic appearance.

In terms of the building envelope, the works aim to renovate all facades while scrupulously respecting the spirit of the original work. The window frames will be replaced like-for-like, and high-performance insulation systems will be implemented at the waterproofing level, with the objective of achieving a 50% reduction in the building's energy consumption. Thermal and acoustic comfort will also be considerably improved, without altering the building's external appearance.

Inside, a profound transformation awaits the three levels of the library. The space will be entirely reimagined to meet the needs and practices of today's students, evolving into a true Learning Center. Thirty-two modular rooms will be fitted out to encourage collaborative work, while preserving areas dedicated to concentration and individual study. BUMP will no longer be merely a place for consultation, but also a space for meeting, exchange, and collective creation.

The Forum de la Paix, located at the foot of the library, will also be profoundly transformed. The current tiered seating will give way to a new building dedicated to food services, housing a 130-cover restaurant open to both the university community and the general public. Finally, in the basement of BUMP, a parking area for two-wheelers will be created, capable of accommodating up to 88 bicycles, including cargo bikes, along with changing rooms and showers — reflecting the commitment to fully integrating soft mobility into campus life.
