Reinforcement worker is responsible for installing what could be called the "skeleton of the building."
After a detailed study of the ground and based on reinforcement schedules (plans for the different metals to be used), the steel fixer selects the bars and mesh, cuts, bends, and welds them to form the formwork (temporary structure) that will receive the concrete.
Depending on the size of the construction team, the steel fixer may or may not then pour the concrete after preparing it.
The Reinforcement worker is therefore a key player on the construction site and must be versatile. They must also have other knowledge of masonry. Reinforcement worker are required to work far from home and to build formwork at height or underground.
Mission
Read and interpret the reinforcement plan, sketches, or construction site instructions
- Install rods, wire mesh, or other similar materials to reinforce the concrete
- Cut, bend, tie, weld, lay, and install reinforcing steel used in the construction of formwork, columns, beams, slabs, or any other similar structure
- Manufacture and install reinforcement parts and prefabricated elements
- Install mechanical joints, anchors, and studs.
Required skills and qualifications
- Mastery of various techniques for welding and tying bars and mesh
- Knowledge of different types of reinforcement (stirrups, main reinforcement, assembly reinforcement, etc.)
- Knowledge of the location and function of concrete reinforcement
- Know the techniques for assembling and fastening steel
- Comply with safety standards
- Know how to read and comply with reinforcement plans and schedules
- Cut bars to size
- Be skilled in using the equipment available (pliers, motorized shears, etc.)
- Be punctual
